Barkleyville Dog Park is popular and successful because it is the ONLY dog park of quality located in the city of Stockton. The city park is located at 5505 Feather River Drive and on any given evening, if you show up around 6:30 PM you will see an abundance of caring, involved dog owners and their pets enjoying the many amenities of the park, which include:

Four Acres

Agility Course

Separated Large Dog (>20 lb) and Small Dog (<20 lb) Play Areas

Benches

Walking Paths

As the most popular dog area in Stockton, and one of only three official Dog Parks recognized my the City of Stockton it is frustrating, knowing that the City of Stockton takes no action to protect its citizens or their beloved pets. Since the start of the year, at least three car accidents have taken place in front of the dog park and endangered the lives of people and animals alike.

As you can see, there are NO BARRIERS preventing cars from leaving the roadway and crashing into the park. As a matter of fact, on Supper Bowl Sunday one vehicle ended up in the park upside down. Luckily no dogs or dog owners were in the small dog area at the time, otherwise they easily could have ended up dead. These two pictures depict the damage created by these accidents over the past winter. Not only has the City of Stockton failed to fix the fence, but they have also failed to provided barriers to protect the people and animals inside of the park.

The small dog area is not the only area that endangers the lives of people and dogs. As you can see in this picture, it would be very easy for a vehicle to leave the roadway and plow into the large dog area as well.

The situation at Barkleyville Dog Park is dangerous and it is the responsibility of the City of Stockton to remedy it. The location of the park is a danger to people and dogs alike. I highly suggest the implementation of an aesthetically pleasing concrete barrier to protect lives.
If measures of this are deemed to be insufficient then there are other barriers that could be utilized. The fact of the matter is, there is only one worthwhile dog park within the City of Stockton that actually sees regular use. It is important to community members for Barkleyville Dog Park to evolve into a safe place to gather, and it is the responsibility of Stockton City Council Members to provide that factor of safety. The fact that no barriers were provided during the park's initial design is a critical design flaw and demonstrates yet another failing of the Stockton City Council.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02189838537426513559noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2346910639235585962.post-59250572643071249592014-03-20T23:51:00.001-07:002014-03-20T23:52:24.649-07:00Hikers Beware! With it's close proximity to Stockton and it's welcoming attitude towards dogs, it seems like an ideal place to hike, but you might want to rethink that this year.

As early as January, rabies infected animals have been discovered throughout El Dorado County. Rabies is primarily transferred to dogs through the bite of an infected animal, and can lead to extreme aggression, seizures, and death of your family pet. There is NO CURE for your dog once symptoms reveal themselves, and it is possible for you contract the disease as well. Similarly, once symptoms show up in a human, no known cure exists for the disease.

Protect yourself, and avoid the Tahoe area until the situation is brought under control! Instead of hiking at Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, the Red Woods, and many more beautiful natural attractions are in similar driving distance from Stockton and offer a significantly reduced risk of contracting Rabies.

If you do take your dog to the Lake Tahoe area, please ensure that your puppy has been fully vaccinated against Rabies. Not only for the health of your dog, but for your health as well.
I have two very active dogs and I am ALWAYS searching for ways to entertain them. I was shopping at Cost-Co recently, and I came across a pack that included a Tricky Treat Ball and Nature's Champions Training Treats. The whole thing was under $20 and my dogs go crazy over it! Seriously, they will play with it for HOURS at a time and don't make a peep, or find time to chew on anything they aren't supposed to!

I didn't think that my older dog would play with the toy properly. I was expecting him to rip the soft toy apart and just eat the treats, but he is actually the one who likes it the most! I posted some pictures of him playing with it.

The toy can be purchased at almost any pet store. You can find a link to a review here: Omega Paw. The site even lists places nearby where you can purchase the toy. If you don't feel like going to the store, you can buy it online without the treats for about $6. Seriously, this inexpensive fix will save you lots of money and your animals will LOVE IT!

I have noticed a trait in Stockton Craigslist Ads. Many of the "Free Dog to Caring Home" ads use a baby as the primary reason why they can no-longer keep the dog. These ads say something like:

"Friendly, well-behaved dog. We hate to get rid of her, but we are expecting a baby and will no longer be able to keep her."

A baby should never be a reason to abandon your pet! Just like you create a birthing plan for your little human's arrival, you should also make a plan to prepare your pet for the changes your family is about to experience! You have nine months to prepare, and adding a little patience and extra training time can do wonders to ready your pet for a little-one, regardless of your fur-baby's personality. Try these helpful ideas for starters!

List it Out!

Think seriously about what changes will be happening in the home. Will there be an increased noise level? Will the dog no longer be allowed in the study because it's becoming a nursery? Are doggie kisses still a good idea? If you aren't sure about what ground rules you want to establish for your pooch, try asking friends who have pets and kids. Find out what they think works and what doesn't. Then, make a list and stick to it!

Practice & Practice More!

Invest in a $20 baby doll that cries and makes noise. Then, do all the things you would do with a real baby. Rock it, change it's diaper, and let it cry. Observe your pup's behavior. Sometimes behaviors such as barking, nipping, or other lash out behaviors develop when a baby is first brought home. Practicing with a doll can help determine if your dog has any of these behavioral concerns, and allows you to address them prior to being a new parent.

Train, Train, Train!

Consistently rehearse commands including sit, stay, quiet, and leave-it, as well as any other commands your puppy may have forgotten or has trouble with. Working on these behaviors not only strengthens your relationship with your dog, but it also prepares him to obey you for when the baby arrives. I especially suggest practicing "leave it" on new baby toys that will be lying around.

In addition to training your dog, train yourself to always have an attentive eye. No matter how well-behaved your pooch is, animals can only take so much before asserting their dominance, so don't allow younger children to hit your animal, tug on it's lip, or any other behavior that can cause your animal to reactive negatively. This means supervising interactions between your dog and baby closely!

Good Doggies Don't Jump!

A common greeting when your walk in the front door is probably a hug and kisses from your four-legged fur baby. When it's just you and your spouse it was probably a welcomed and encouraged behavior, but it is not a good one to have when you have a baby around. Think about how many times you will be standing with the baby in your arms.

A jumping dog creates opportunity for your baby to be scratched or injured, so stop it before it's a problem! You have nine months to re-train your dog to stay down, or only jump up on command! IE Problem Eliminated!

Do you Smell That?

Babies come with a variety of new smells! From diapers to baby powder, lotion and more there will be lots of new and interesting things that will interest your dog. Bring these things into the home long before the baby is due and allow your dog to get to know them. Have your pooch practice sniffing these things, but not moving or biting them. I suggest offering an incentive, such as treats. This way, you won't go to change your baby's diaper only to discover that the wipes have been chewed up and are on the floor.

Following these 5 tips is just the start. Lots of preparation is needed for a successful introduction of a baby to the family pet. The following websites offer lots of useful tips that will help guide you on your way!

The Importance of Micro-chipping:

Dogs are not like other animals. They build strong emotional bonds with their owners and are truly a unique and important part of the family. If you have a family pet, get it micro-chipped today! It is YOUR responsibility as head of the family to keep your family united and whole. No matter how hard you try, it is impossible to keep your pet safe and in the yard 100% of the time. Micro-chipping is inexpensive and it is THE BEST way to ensure the return of your loved family canine!

Typically, without using special discounted offers, it is less than $25 to get your pet micro-chipped.

That is like buying one extra bag of dog food for one month!

It is 100% WORTH the money!

Don't allow the expense of micro-chipping to stop you! There are many community programs that offer discounted or free microchips to caring dog owners.

Check your local shelter and pet advocacy centers to learn about programs in your area today!

His anxiety is most extreme when he is kenneled, but he experiences it in some form almost every time we leave the house. I tried everything the books suggested:

Ignoring him while I was getting ready to leave.

Not making a big deal of seeing him when I came home.

Giving him special treats or bones when we left.

Eventually someone recommended that I purchase a Busy Buddy, and I have never been happier!

There are a variety of designs for dogs of all ages and sizes, and let me tell you, in my experience they work!

In my older dog, the separation anxiety has disappeared. Now, we can come home after hours of being gone to a clean house where nothing has been chewed on or moved. In addition, my puppy LOVES the line of toys and never stops playing with them. While the toys tend to be pricey to purchase, the treats that are used with them are inexpensive and healthy, and my dogs can't get enough of them! Plus, paying for the toys is a lot less than paying to replace items in a torn up house! Check out the PetSafe website to see the full line of Busy Buddy toys, or go to your nearest pet store! In my experience, most pet stores of quality carry them!

If you need a cheap, but healthy alternative for food, try the Cost-Co brand of Dog/Puppy Formula.

Costing roughly $35 / 40lb, it is reasonably priced.

Kirkland Dry food is rated 4.5/5 stars by leading experts and my own veterinarian personally recommended it for us. She said that it is one of the best dog foods and comes at a reasonable price!

Better still, the food is actually GOOD for your dog, unlike many other cheap dog foods (i.e. Pedigree and Purina which only rate 1 star).

Prevent your dog from eating harmful treats and foods by keeping up with recalls Here.

Consumption of a recalled product can make your dog really sick, or even kill your family pet.

Puppies, young or old, eat all sorts of things.

Eating squeakers or rope-toys can be deadly and expensive! Watch these types of toys around your dog, especially if he or she likes to tear toys apart!

Get to know your puppy's body!

You should familiarize yourself with you dog's body starting the first day you bring it home! This is important because detection of lumps or other problems can help you contain problems before they get out of hand, minimizing the damage to your dog and your wallet.

Lumps can sometimes be related to disease or cancer, so it is important to know immediately once one has developed and to seek treatment ASAP!

Lumps on the belly can indicate a hernia.

Thoroughly check your puppies nodes!

This can be done my routinely massaging your dog's throat, the area directly in front of and behind both sets of your dog's legs, and your mutt's butt.

The nodes can become impacted and infected, leading to pain and a distinctive smell that won't disappear with a bath. If your dog is rubbing his or her butt on the ground frequently, it could be a sign that a problem is beginning.

If there is a patch of fur missing on the underside of your dog's tail, it can be an indication of worms, which can lead to heart and other health problems.

Instead of going to the vet for treatment, go to your local pet store!

$15 worm treatment pills can be purchased for your dog according to its weight. Buying these over the counter solutions is cheaper and just as effective. Additionally, directions are included for how frequently you should treat your animal. Think of it as similar to how you treat your dog for fleas!

Mange

While not contagious to other dogs, it can be expensive to treat. Most commonly mange begins at the base of the tail, under the arm pits, and behind the ears.

If you see areas of hair-loss or redness, seek treatment! Mange is especially common in Stockton!

Pay attention to your dog's normal behavior and physique!

Dry noses, bloated tummies, lasting weakness & tiredness, excessive water consumption, diarrhea, & vomiting are all signs of trouble!

If you notice any of these symptoms, seek Veterinary care!

Especially if you walk along the delta & levees of Stockton, taking care of your dog's paws is important!

In summer, grass seeds, burrs, thorns, and more can end up tangled in your dog's fur or paws, and it is extremely painful! If not treated immediately, infection can set in and damage can be made permanent!

Try diydoggrooming.com for tips on how to treat these nasty spring & summer nuisances.

Proper nail care is also important! Broken nails are painful and overgrown nails cause problems of their own!

Check out the SPCA's tips on nail care solutions at home or go to PetSmart to have your family pet bathed, receive a nail trim, and the whole package!

Watch the Stockton Heat!

Walking on hot cement can cause painful blisters that can get infected!

Rather than paying for treatment, walk in the early morning or late afternoon once the cement and roads have cooled down.

If you insist on walking in the heat of the day, try using paw protection. Ultra Paws cost about $30 and are a good option.

Today was one of the first nice days in Stockton that we have had in weeks. I observed many people out and about enjoying the sunshine. I heard BBQ’s. I watched children outside running, and above all, I witnessed many families walking with their dogs.

Man’s best friend is no stranger to nice weather, and it’s great to have your mutt outside when the weather permits, but it is also VERY IMPORTANT to keep your pal’s safety in mind. I have made a little list of how to keep your pup healthy while enjoying the nice weather.

STAY HYDRATED!!!
Every time you drink a glass of water, your dog should too. It’s all too easy to forget to give your animal cold water throughout the day. If you put your dog outside while you are away, ensure he or she has access to clean water and a way to cool down. I suggest filling a kiddy pool up so that your pet can lay in it to cool off. It is also a good idea to leave a self-filling water bowl outside at all times of the year. In addition, ensure your pooch has access to immediate shade. Your backyard should have a tree to hide under or a doghouse where your dog can get out of the scorching Stockton sun!

If you are going on a walk or hike, bring a collapsible pet bowl for your pup or consider teaching them to drink from a water bottle!

Also, never leave your best friend in a car unattended during hot summer days. It can be deadly!

KEEP POISONS AWAY FROM YOUR PETS!!!
This seems like common sense, but think about what you do during the summer. If you are anything like me, you probably:

fertilize the lawn

leave citronella candles out while having a mid-summer dinner

leave alcoholic beverages on the table or deck while cooking

All of these things seem harmless. You probably grew up doing them, but if ingested by your pooch, these poisons can cause serious reactions. In some cases exposure to poisons, such as alcohol, can leave your dog dead, or with a very large hospital bill. In other cases, the fumes alone are enough to cause a severe reaction in the skin (candles).

To avoid these situations:

Never leave alcohol unattended.

Place candles up high, out of the reach of your animals.

After fertilizing water heavily and keep your dog out of the area for a few days.

WATCH WHAT YOU SPRAY!!!
Sun screens, perfumes, and mosquito repellents should not be used on dogs unless they are specifically labeled for pet use. Why? Exposure to these sprays can lead to rash, excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and more. Don’t do that to your pet.

BE AWARE OF FLAMES AND EXPLOSIVES
Almost everyone loves having a nice bonfire or lighting off fireworks during good weather; that is, everyone except for your dog.

Loud noises, like those that occur on the 4th of July, are scary for pets. Consider keeping them inside in a secure location. It may also be a good idea to play the radio or TV to offer a distraction. If this doesn’t work, you might need to medicate them, to reduce your animal’s anxiety.

My Vet suggested giving my 60lb dog 1 60 mg pill of Children’s Nighttime Benadryl. She said this will make him tired and less anxious, but this little trick also helps reduce the severity of allergic reactions.

IMPORTANT: you MUST consult your veterinarian prior to giving your dog human medication. Certain dogs are allergic to specific medicines, and MOST DOGS are allergic to Tylenol.

In addition, exposure to matches & lighter fluids can be dangerous on many levels! Exposure to the fumes can lead to respiration problems, and if fluid ends up on your dog, all it takes is a single spark and severe bodily damage can occur. If your dog is exposed to lighter fluid, wash your pet immediately!!!

DEADLY DIGESTION
Everyone wants to give into those puppy-dog eyes and feed their mutt scraps from the picnic, but giving your dog chicken bones, onions, and chocolates should be avoided at all costs!!! These foods can be dangerous and toxic to your pet.

On top of this, keep a close eye on things like beer caps, glow sticks, and festive decorations. If any of these are ingested by your dog it can lead to severe intestinal damage, an astronomical vet bill, and, in some cases, death.

PARVO VIRUS
Parvo Virus is the most common during the spring and summer months. This year in Stockton, the number of deaths due to the virus is expected to skyrocket. Already, Weston Ranch Dog Park has been closed temporarily due to the parvo-related death of a puppy at the site.

The disease in commonly transmitted through dog and cat feces. If a puppy walks through an area with affected fecal matter and then licks his or her feet, it is likely to get the disease. Worse off, treatment of Parvo is extremely expensive, and even with veterinary treatment, the likelihood of survival is slim.
To avoid contracting this disease, prevent your dog from going outside until he or she has completely finished his or her set of Parvo Vaccines. Flies are also known to carry the disease, so keeping your dog in your yard will not be proactive enough in Stockton this year.

If your dog does contract the disease and you cannot afford veterinary care, there are some alternatives. Hydration is the most important, so give your dog lots of water. I have even heard of people using Pedialyte successfully in combating the disease. There are also two well-known home remedies called ParvoBuster and PARV AID.

Affordable Dog Travel

Spring and summer are fast approaching and that means travel! If your family is anything like mine, you are probably planning road trips, visits with relatives, and a vacation or two! Not to mention, your family probably includes someone with paws! Try these great money-saving tips while traveling with your paw buddy:

If you are staying in Stockton for a Local Event

Motel 6 Stockton North #1323 ~$44/Night

La Quinta Inn Stockton ~$70/Night

Phone: 1-209-952-7800- Pets Stay Free Here!! (Limit 2 Pets/ room)

Best Western PLUS Heritage Inn~$90/Night

111 E March Ln

Stockton, CA 95207-5854

Phone: 209-474-3301 – Pet Rate $20/ day, Maximum $100/Week (Limit 2 Pets/room & 80 lbs/dog)

If you are traveling outside of Stockton, try this useful website to compare dog-friendly hotels, their available amenities, and the associated costs.

Looking for a travel option cheaper than hotels? Try camping when traveling with your dog!

While less convenient, tenting or trailering it while traveling long distances can save a lot of money. Your pooch will also get a chance to enjoy the outdoors after the long car ride!

KOA Campgrounds are a great option because they are designed for short stays and are often conveniently close to the highway, major cities, and restaurants. KOA campsites typically cost around $55/night (less than half of what it costs to stay in a nice hotel for the night). Check HERE to learn about KOA’s pet policy.

Some KOA’s discriminate based on breed, but there are many other camping options available to you. You just need to conduct research ahead of time!

Another way to travel as a dog owner is to arrange for a family friend to stay at your home. This way, your animals don’t have the added stress of travel. Instead they get to stay at home, be pampered, and go on walks in an environment they are comfortable in. Often times you can find a responsible high-school aged person who just wants to get away from home and will do it for free. Another option is to offer a friend ~$20/day to stay there and care for your animals.

Still have questions? This website has some good information on traveling with Pets.

“I rescued my dog from the Stockton shelter and she is not getting along with any other dog. Please let me know if you have any good tips for dogs with anxiety.”

I know that this can be a tricky situation for all dog owners. The question is how to deal with aggressive dog behavior, especially when you do not know what the dog has been through in its past.
While I am not an expert in the field, I do have some suggestions for how to address this behavior. After doing some reading, it appears that anxiety can be related to high energy/stress environments, previous negative experiences around other dogs (such as fighting), and protectiveness of the owner (i.e. if the dog is on a leash).

These are my suggestions on how to combat the issue:

Aggression in High Energy/Stress Environments:

The best policy is to keep your animal out of these types of environments as much as possible; however, more frequent exposure to over-stimulation, such as the frequent playing of loud music, and periodic exposure to children, will make your dog more predictable in these high-stimuli environments. I would still recommend keeping your dog away from other animals during these times, because it could be the other animals' nervous energy that is raising your own dog's anxiety and causing the aggression.

Aggression Related to Negative Previous Experiences:

This is one of the more difficult forms of dog aggression to deal with. After consulting The Whole Dog Journal, I would recommend the following course of action:

First, introduce your dog to the other dog’s smell via a towel. Then, allow the two dogs to meet through a neutral fence, but at first do not allow the dogs to see one another, just let them smell one another through the fence, with their vision blocked by a towel. Then, keeping both dogs muzzled, allow them to be in a fenced area together. (Make sure the area is free of food, water, and toys).

After a half hour, if the dogs are not being aggressive, you can un-muzzle them. If the aggression remains, try the introduction a few other times. After enough familiarity is built, the aggression should subside.

Aggression While Leashed:

Rather than jerking your dog back and scolding your dog, distract him or her from the other animal. For example, talk animatedly, or stop and feed your dog treats continually until the other dog has walked out of your dog’s field of vision.

Experts say that scolding and physical punishment only reinforce the idea that being around other animals is bad. It teaches your dog to associate punishment with close proximity of other dogs. By distracting them, you begin to break this association. Eventually your dog should learn to ignore the other animals in hopes of receiving treats. After this association is established, you can start only rewarding your animal for non-aggressive behavior while around other animals.

Protective Aggression:

Take your dog somewhere that is neutral territory. I would suggest a park, such as BarkleyVille Dog Park, where there are fenced areas. Do not try to introduce animals somewhere they are familiar with, such as home.

Next, put your dog on one side of the fence and walk to the other side of the fence, so that you are standing in clear view of your dog with the fence between you. Now, have a small dog released into the area where you stand.

Your dog will probably start barking and growling. Don’t let this discourage you. Instead, keep your voice calm and address your dog saying things like, “It’s OK.” Pet the other dog while addressing your dog for 5-10 minutes. Then, go back to the side of the fence that your animal is on and give him or her lots of love and attention. If your dog seems to have calmed down, you can try letting the two dogs sniff through the fence.

After doing this once or twice with the same dog, you can try letting them meet without the fence. I would recommend that the person the dog is protective over be present, but removed from the first introduction by 20 feet or so. Then, once the dogs have gotten to know one another and calmed down, you can walk over to where your dog is.

I would start with a smaller, calm dog that will not come across as threatening. Then, you can work your way up to larger dogs. After conducting the introduction with dogs of all sizes, your dog should be less aggressive and protective of you while in the presence of other dogs.
Especially in Stockton, finding a home to rent that allows dogs seems impossible. My experience has been that 90% of property owners here do not permit dogs in their homes, and if they do, they require that the dog be less than 20 lb. Not to mention, the discrimination against Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and other stereotyped large breeds.

Many families have been fortunate enough to convince their current landlord to allow the adoption of a puppy or rescue, but now they are faced with moving and cannot find a home to rent that will allow them to keep their dog. Often, these situations are heartbreaking to the family because they feel they have no choice but to take their pet to a shelter or turn it loose on the street. More often than not, these displaced animals end up dead.

Today I would like to offer suggestions on how to avoid these situations. I would like to make it clear that IT IS possible to own and keep a dog of any breed and size in Stockton, regardless of whether or not you own a home. You simply need to follow these steps:

Make Time!!!

If it is not an emergency situation, give yourself as much time as possible to relocate.

This gives you the chance to

Check Craigslist for Pet Friendly Rentals

Place housing ads in the paper and online

Check Facebook and other resources for potential rental locations

Convince your future landlord that they WANT you and your family pet as tenants!

Acquire Rental Insurance prior to filling out a rental application!

It is important to verify that the company you go with covers both Physical and Medical damage caused by your dog, and that the company does NOT discriminate by breed.

Try these insurance companies for non-discriminatory pet coverage:

Need more information? Check out this Website

Private owners are a lot easier to deal with compared to large companies.

Instead of applying for housing in large multiunit facilities, look for a small house for rent by owner.

This way you can explain your situation in an intimate setting where a personal connection can be developed.

Many property owners have had negative experiences with dogs in the past and that is why they ban them. For example, my landlord told me a story about how a couple abandoned their pet in his house when they moved, and the dog was left inside the home with no food or water for days. Not only did the inside of the home get destroyed, but the dog attacked the landlord when he showed up to evaluate the property.

You can lay your landlord’s mind to rest about matters of this nature by doing the following:

Assure the landlord that the dog will always be well provided for and will NEVER be abandoned on the property.

If you go on vacation arrange for someone to stay with your animal or take it to a boarding facility.

Provide legal documentation that the animal is yours. This way, if there is an issue, the dog is traceable back to you, giving the landlord legal proof that he or she is not financially responsible for the incident.

Have your dog micro chipped.

Have the appropriate city license on your pet’s collar.

Insist that when you are not on the property, the dog will be crated or confined to a specific room, so that even when you are not home, the landlord will have the ability to enter the property.

Train, train, train! Ensure that your dog is well behaved!

Provide proof that your animal has taken and passed a behavior class.

Show photos of your dog at the dog park and around children to demonstrate how well socialized the animal is.

Dress nicely, and bring your dog to meet the landlord. Then show off simple behaviors such as “sit,” “stay,” and “roll-over,” to demonstrate your pup’s great personality!

First impressions count! It is also more difficult for a landowner to say. “No” to a well-behaved dog that they have already met!

If you are moving to a new home, write a letter stating that your dog has been well behaved and non-problematic and ask your current landlord to sign in.

In many cases, I have heard that this has a significant impact on changing the new landlord’s mind.

You may also consider having your neighbors sign a letter saying that your pet is not a howler or aggressive, and that there have not been any neighborhood incidents involving your animal.

Tell the landlord how well you will take care of his or her property!

Insist that you will perform “doggie duty” on a consistent basis, no less than every other day.

If the home has hardwood floors consider putting rugs down throughout the home.

Finally, if all else fails, see if you a friend or neighbor can care for your pet for a few months while you continue your search for a pet friendly home!

Raising and training a dog takes a lot of work, not to mention your pet is an important and meaningful part of your family! Don’t let that relationship be ruined! You and your pet deserve a home where you can live happily ever after!

I have a number of other ideas concerning this matter, so if you have tried these ideas and are still getting nowhere, please contact me! I would love to help you out of the situation that you are in!

Would you like to get more involved in your community? Is your company looking to sponsor a local non-profit organization?

There are many reasons why you could be interested in learning more about local Stockton animal shelters and humane societies.

At first, researching rescue organizations may be overwhelming. You might be asking any of these questions:

Where should I take my business?

Which organization would benefit the most from my donation?

If I'm interesting in fostering an animal, which shelters have foster programs?

Where can I adopt on a budget?

Where do I get the most preventative health care for my money?

And each question has a corresponding animal shelter that will fit your exact needs.

I have gone through and complied data on the three biggest rescue organizations in Stockton so that you can find the information you need at a quick and easy glance.
A friend of mine received this e-mail recently and I thought it would be useful if I shared his response and my thoughts on the letter with all of you:

Dear Gary,

I need help with a pressing issue. I have been fostering a cat for the past 6 months and unfortunately my housing no longer allows this. She is going to a good home (one in which I can visit her), however I will miss her very much. I want to foster animals in the future, but I am worried that letting them go will be too hard.

Please help!

This was his response:

I think it's great that you chose to foster a cat and provide it with the loving care and shelter that all foster animals deserve! I know how hard it is to let go of a foster animal that you've taken such good care for. Keep in mind how much better off she will be in her new home. It makes things a bit easier.

I recommend keeping in touch with the new families of the foster animals you have cared for. In addition, live in a place where pets are openly accepted.

Ultimately, you want to do what is best for your fosters and a finding them a good home is the best hope for their future. You should always remember that fostering is a labor of love and by doing so, you are saving the life of a homeless animal that could use all the support it can get.

Your kindness and strength in allowing them to go to a wonderful adoptive home reflects that selfless love and effort. So don't worried about letting them go. Be proud and continue to open your heart to a loving animal in need!
It is not possible to save and keep every animal that you come across. By fostering animals, you are not only sharing your love with more animals, but you are making it possible to save many more lives! If you find yourself becoming very attached to your fosters, consider asking the new family to friend you on Facebook. That way, they can tag you in photos of the animal, and you can observe from a distance the love and joy that you helped bring into your foster's life as well as the lives of the family members. I think the satisfaction will help to overcome any feelings of sadness.

The most important part is, if an animal with a microchip is

he or she escapes.

to train your animal properly.

If your dog is trained to remain in the yard or at your side while
unleashed, he or she is less likely to bolt and escape your property. For
example, I have my dog trained so that, when given permission, he exits the
front porch and jumps into the back of the truck. My experience has been that
the few times he has dashed out the front door, he quickly returns to the porch
or truck after sniffing for a few moments, even without direct supervision.

I also suggest socializing your animal and training it not to
jump on people, so that if it does exit your property unsupervised, whoever
finds it will see what a well-behaved, loving dog you have. If the person finds
your dog approachable, rather than being afraid of it, he or she will be encouraged
to try to find its home.
Today I am going to introduce you to a secret gem of Stockton. I like to call it Agriculture Row. It is a dog-friendly dirt walking path that is perfect for letting your dog off leash to run or walk by your side. Very few people know of this walking trail, so typically you will be able to enjoy your walk through nature in seclusion.

It is a very peaceful environment filled with running water from the nearby irrigation canals and birds of vibrant colors. The trail starts by winding through groves of walnut trees. Eventually the trail splits and you can choose to walk along grassy fields, continue into the trees, or loop around a farm taking in the sight of the crops. There are four loops in total and the shortest loop is about 1 mile in length.

I recommend walking in the early morning because seeing the fog on the ground in combination with the sunrise is breathtaking. The local animals seem to be more active at this time as well! No matter what time you go for your walk, I am confident that you will love it!
